Retro Cool Shoes Nike Cortez & Artificial Intelligence
Touted as the most important sneaker in the history of Nike, the Nike Cortez is a very cool protective everyday shoe. Replace the insole with your own custom orthotic or over the counter support, and you have something really fabulous. Designed in 1972…these shoes are as old as me! And much cooler! While my friend Stacy is lovingly gifted fashion forward shoes by husband Bill, I covet these Nikes & aim to make a pair mine. I like the sturdiness of the leather upper and the overall feel. It’s a throwback to 6th grade with the giant plastic pink comb in the back pocket ready to feather the hair. I longed for a pair of the pristine white leather kicks with a simple yet bold colorful swoosh. What about you? As I put the cap on my strawberry lip smacker gloss, I reflect & finally shop for a pair of coveted Nike Cortez. Better late than never!

As far as what’s the newest coming out of Nike? Nike announced this week an artificial intelligence shoe measuring app for your phone. Using the Nike Fit technology your feet can be more accurately measured. This equals less returns for Nike & less painful feet for us in the general public. From news.nike.com, ” for example, if you have used Nike Fit to scan your feet and you go to purchase a Nike Cortez on the Nike app, you won’t see a run of sizes anymore. Instead you’ll just see your size for that particular shoe. Then if you go to buy a Nike Air Zoom Pegasus you might see another size.” As a podiatrist, the biggest problems I see stem from poorly fitted or inappropriate shoes. Look for the Nike Fit app in July 2019 in the United States & August for Europe.

I have a second toe longer than my big toe. Thick callous on the end of it. Can you give me pointers as to what to look for in a shoe? Are there certain brands that will work better for me. I am totally into comfort.

Hi Mary Lou, Great question & topic! A big percentage (20-30%) of people have a longer 2nd toe which is named a “Morton’s toe”. With the thick callous at the end it is rubbing a bit too much, and a podiatrist can treat that. First shoe tip is to always measure your foot to the 2nd toe rather than 1st. The AI app described above will be a positive game changer for you helping guide a customized fit for your feet. If you are totally into comfort, I suggest comfort sandals with built in arch supports such as the Revere & Vionic brands. Just make sure there isn’t a lip at the end of the shoe the 2nd toe could come up against. You share lovely company with the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle. Looking at her comfort shoe choices, she’s a fan of the slipper like Birdies & sustainable Rothy brand. The soft & forgiving materials allow a bit more room to accommodate for the toe. I prefer a bit more arch support & stability but having a Birdie as a dress shoe is a great option. A more pointy toe shoe also allows for a longer 2nd toe…but sometimes at the expense of your other toes being squished. Conversely the best way to go for comfort not in a sandal is a shoe with an extremely roomy toe box such as a Keen or Dansko. Let me know what you find as I will work on a blog post!
